Break the Journey

Same destination. A more interesting way.

Sometimes the best part of the journey is the bit in between.

Break the Journey is a flight search that looks for trips where adding a stopover costs less than flying straight through — or close enough that an extra city is worth it. You search a normal flight (from, to, date, passengers), then see where you could break the journey for a few days along the way.

How it works

Where the numbers come from

Fares come from live flight-data sources, and the stopover prices are worked out by searching real flights on both halves of the trip. The "best stopovers found so far" you see on the home page and on the Inspiration page start from real searches run on this site, and are then re-priced live a few times a day — both the stopover trip and the flight it's compared to. Each card says which route and date it's for and when it was priced, because a price on one date doesn't apply to every date. The saving shown is always measured against the best-value flight on that route and date. "Best value" is the same ranking our results page uses under its Value tab: price, plus a penalty for travel time and for each stop. We show that comparison flight's price, stops and duration on every card so you can judge it yourself, and a deal we can't re-check is simply not shown.

Prices change quickly. Always check the final price and itinerary on the booking page before you pay.

What to know about stopovers

A stopover trip is two separate tickets, not one connecting itinerary. That means you'll collect your bags and check in again at the stopover, you're responsible for visa and transit requirements in the stopover country, and the airline on one ticket isn't obliged to protect the other. Some flights on the results page are also marked Self-transfer: those connect through separate tickets even within a single leg, so leave real time between flights and check whether you need to change airports.

How we make money

Break the Journey is free to use. When you book through one of our links, we may earn a small commission from the booking partner, at no extra cost to you. It doesn't change the order or the prices we show.
